How Much Does a Napa Designated Driver Cost?

Planning a day in wine country and trying to figure out what it'll actually cost? You're not alone — it's one of the most common questions we get, and honestly, one of the most confusing to research. Between per-person tour packages, flat-rate limo services, and rideshare estimates that spike the moment you add stops, it's hard to know what you're really paying for.

The short answer: Safe Drive Napa's designated driver service starts at $360 for a 6-hour day ($60/hour, we drive your car), or $720 for 6 hours if you'd rather ride in our chauffeured Tesla Model X ($120/hour). Most full-day trips run 8–10 hours once you add a meal and a couple of wineries — here's exactly how that breaks down.

Pricing at a Glance

The hourly rate stays the same regardless of headcount — the more people in your group, the lower the per-person cost.

Real Example: A Quick Half-Day, 6 Hours

Not everyone wants a full 10-hour wine country marathon — maybe you've got an evening flight, a couple who wants a relaxed afternoon, or a group that just wants two solid winery stops without committing the whole day. That's exactly what our 6-hour minimum is built for.

What fits in 6 hours? A few common ways groups use their time:

  • 2 winery tastings + a sit-down meal — the classic combo (2 hrs + 2 hrs + 2 hrs)

  • 2 wineries + a grab-and-go lunch — leaves a little breathing room, or space for a quick third casual stop

  • 3 wineries, no formal meal — for groups who'd rather maximize tastings and snack between stops

  • 1 winery + a longer, relaxed lunch + time to browse downtown Napa or St. Helena — a slower-paced day for groups who don't want to feel rushed

None of these is more "right" than another — 6 hours just means you're choosing where the time goes. Here's what one version of that day looks like in practice:

  • Pickup and drive to your first winery

  • 2 hours: Winery #1 tasting

  • Quick grab-and-go lunch (Oakville Grocery or Gott's Roadside) instead of a sit-down meal

  • 2 hours: Winery #2 tasting

  • Return drive

Cost: 6 hours × $60/hour = $360 for the day (using your own car or rental) Or: 6 hours × $120/hour = $720 for the day (riding in our Tesla Model X)

Split across a couple, that's $180 (own car) or $360 (Tesla) each. Split across a group of 6, it drops to $60 or $120 per person — a private, unhurried day at two wineries with no shared van, no fixed schedule, and no deposit to lock in the date.

Real Example: The Girls Trip, 1 Day vs. 2 Days

To make this concrete, here's exactly what two of our most popular girls trip itineraries cost, stop by stop.

1-Day Girls Trip

A 10-hour day covering Domaine Carneros, lunch at Angele in Downtown Napa, Caymus, and Nickel & Nickel.

Cost: 10 hours × $60/hour = $600 for the day (using your own car or rental) Or: 10 hours × $120/hour = $1,200 for the day (riding in our Tesla Model X)

Split across a group of 6 friends, that's $100 per person with your own vehicle, or $200 per person if you'd rather leave the car at home and ride in our Tesla — either way, it's a private day hitting three well-known wineries plus a reservation, with no shared van, no fixed schedule, and no deposit to lock in the date.

2-Day Girls Trip

Day 1 follows the same itinerary as the 1-Day Girls Trip above — Domaine Carneros, lunch at Angele in Downtown Napa, Caymus, Nickel & Nickel, and dinner at RH Yountville or Bottega — for another 10-hour day.

Cost: 20 hours × $60/hour = $1,200 for the two days (using your own car or rental) Or: 20 hours × $120/hour = $2,400for the two days (riding in our Tesla Model X)

Split across a group of 6, that's $200 per person with your own vehicle, or $400 per person in the Tesla — for two full days covering six wineries across Carneros, Yountville, St. Helena, and Calistoga, plus four dining reservations, all with one dedicated driver who knows the roads and reservation timing.

(Note: group size affects your per-person cost directly — a group of 4 would put the 1-day trip at $150/person (own car) or $300/person (Tesla), while a group of 8 brings it down to $75/person (own car) or $150/person (Tesla). The hourly rate stays the same regardless of headcount.)

Why We Don't Require a Deposit

Plans change — someone's flight gets delayed, the group shrinks, the date shifts. A lot of Napa transportation booking requires a deposit upfront, sometimes non-refundable, just to hold your date. We think that adds risk to a day that, by nature, already involves a lot of moving pieces — so we don't do it. You book your date, you go on your trip, and you pay afterward. Simple, low-risk, and one less thing to worry about while you're planning.
